Bangabandhu Tunnel

The Bangabandhu Tunnel, also known as the Karnaphuli Tunnel, is a significant infrastructure project in Bangladesh. It is an underwater tunnel located under the Karnaphuli river, connecting the city of Chittagong with the Anawara Upazila. The tunnel is named in honor of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. It is the first ever under water tunnel in the country and the first river road tunnel in South Asia. On 14 October 2017, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinees communist party general secretary xi Jinping inaugurated the Bangabandhu Tunner. The total length is 9.39 Kilometer where its main long is 3.43 Kilometer, and consists of two parallel tubes one for each direction of traffic. The cost of the project is US $1.1 Billion Doller, of which around half is financed by China Exim Bank. On October 28, 2023, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the tunnel and on 29.10.23 its opened for vehicles.
